If you looked at the world’s top 50 holiday destinations through the filter of Instagram, what could you learn about those places and the people who visit them? Apart from the fact that we really like coffee, doors, sunsets, ourselves, and our feet?
Travel booking site Hoppa has done it, and has just released a cool infographic to dissect our social media-inspired travels. The researchers started with the 50 most traveled to tourist destinations, as determined by Brilliant Maps. Then they started to dig in deeper: examining 1,000 Instagram photos per location and sorting them into various categories (selfie, scenery, food, sexually suggestive, marketing, shopping, wildlife, alcohol, group photos) over the course of one month.
To make sense of all that social media info, they transformed it into an infographic, which, not coincidentally, is also perfect for social media.
The Top 5 Most Instagrammed Destinations:
New York City (52 million)
London (47 million)
Paris (41 million)
Dubai (37 million)
Los Angeles (27 million)
The Most “Liked” Destination in the World: Los Angeles
The Destination with the Most Sexually Suggestive Selfies: also Los Angeles
Top Destination for Selfies: London
Top Destination for Food Instagrams: Phuket, Thailand
Top Destination for Instagrams of Couples: Paris
